Paul Lyons - Student Work
Throughout the three classes I took with Richard Kelly at Pittsburgh Filmmakers – Portrait Photography, Advanced Portrait Photography and Studio Lighting – I could see what a vast amount of knowledge he had to share. In addition to his core curriculum, Kelly elicited from students what they wanted to get out of class, and he made it happen. For example, he helped me to better understand soft-boxes, transmitters/pocket wizards, front/side lighting placement and ratios, and meter readings, as well as how to improve posing and interact with subjects.
Kelly brought in guest lecturers and arranged visits to other artists in the community. He was always available to talk with me outside of class about my work, both while I was enrolled and afterwards. He said that once you’re a student of his, he’ll always be there for you.
Kelly encouraged his students to exhibit their photographs. When I had my first photography exhibition, he met with me about choosing a theme, selecting and narrowing down images to a manageable number, and editing with an eye toward how images would look in juxtaposition with each other. He advised me on choosing photo sizes, determining the best placement in a venue relative to other art work, sequencing photos to tell a story, and how to install and price photos.
Students talk about the “Richard Kelly experience.” He is down to earth, a knowledgeable and generous teacher, mentor and friend.
